Aloe Vera and Pre-eclampsia: A Call For Research (1)

by admin on February 6, 2010

I believe in God. God knows I believe in Him. And I also believe in miracles. I consider those little coincidences in my life as my miracles from God. This is why I believe that my getting to know about aloe vera is a miracle because God knew I was going to need it sometime in the future so He let me be introduced to it earlier.

You see, during my first pregnancy, in my 32nd week, I was diagnosed with Pre-eclampsia. This is pregnancy-induced hypertension with other symptoms such as protein in urine, sudden weight gain, abdominal pains, blurred or double vision, sudden blindness, head aches that won’t go away. Other symptoms may include fever, drowsiness, nausea and vomiting, dizziness. In pre-eclampsia, the placenta which delivers air and food to the baby does not receive enough blood and so does not function well. Added to this, the protein which should help the baby develop normally is passed out in the urine. The result is that the baby is not growing as he should. This condition is bad both for the baby and mother and if  not managed properly, could lead to eclampsia which is more fatal and can result in the death of either or both lives involved.

In most cases where the mother is still early in her pregnancy, the doctors try to control her blood pressure, hoping to buy the baby some time to get stronger especially with his lungs, so as to be able to breathe on his own when born. The mother also gets a steroid injection to help with the baby’s lungs. It’s good news if the blood pressure is put under control though the mother is usually placed on bed rest and under attentive care till when the doctors think it’s best to deliver the baby. However, where the blood pressure cannot be controlled, the baby is delivered immediately. The hypertension should disappear after the delivery of the baby.

In my own case, since my blood pressure could not be controlled, the doctors decided to deliver the premature baby at 33weeks and 5days, explaining that the blood pressure should come down after the delivery. Well, guess what? It didn’t. A few days later, while still on the maximum doses of two drugs for the treatment of my high BP, I was moved to intensive care and wasn’t even allowed out of bed. I got to meet every consultant in OB/GY in the hospital. There was nothing else they could do, they said, since I was already on the maximum doses of two drugs. We just had to wait. With the experienced nurses taking care of my baby in the ICU, and my husband going over to hold him after work, I knew he’d be okay and so had to think of myself.

My husband arranged and got me Garlic and Thyme, and Aloe Vera Gel (drink) from Forever Living Products and I started taking them. Within 2 days, my blood pressure came crashing down to normal.

After my discharge from the hospital, I remained consistent with my FLP supplements and never had a single BP reading that was not normal.

My worry was being told that most women who had pre-eclampsia in their first pregnancy, were most likely to suffer from it again in subsequent pregnancies. Pregnancy alone is tough, but to have it combined with a life and death situation, like Pre-eclampsia, makes it something one would not be too eager to delve into, especially if you’ve been through it before.
